How to make lotion

Tiny Trash Can how to make homemade lotion with zero waste

Cooler temperatures mean drier skin so we made all-natural body lotion this weekend. My son and I have sensitive skin, so making our own personal care products means we know exactly what we’re putting on our bodies. Plus it’s fun! 😃

This soothing body butter not only feels and smells amazing (orange chocolate), but all the ingredients are edible, too! 😋 This DIY lotion saves us money, a trip to the store and plastic bottles! 🙌
I make this lotion zero waste by buying the main ingredients package-free at refill stores and using repurposed glass jars to store it 👍

This lotion is richer than store-bought lotion so a little bit goes a long way 😉 Feel free to cut the recipe in half, or do what I do: Make a full batch then gift a jar or two to friends 🤗

Homemade lotion recipe

Adapted from Back to the Book Nutrition

(Makes about 24 ounces)

Ingredients
1/2 cup pure shea butter*
1/2 cup cocoa butter
1 cup pure coconut oil
1/3 cup arrowroot powder
A few drops of orange essential oil (optional)

* Shea butter can have a very strong scent. I use a white shea butter with a mild scent for this recipe.

Directions
1. Soften shea butter and cocoa butter in microwave or double boiler.
2. Place all ingredients in a medium bowl. Beat until soft peaks form then transfer to glass storage containers.
